Finding Inspiration in Stories of Perseverance and Triumph Builds Faith

I like to read books, that is, when I have time. My favorite categories are biographies, autobiographies and history. Now, don’t get me wrong. I do like a good novel but when walking into the library, I find my feet automatically dragged me towards those three sections.  Why? Because I learn something from each reading, but mostly I find the story told to be inspirational. According to the website Convoy Of Hope1, Individuals are drawn to these types of stories because “they offer lessons of courage, perseverance, and the human spirit’s capacity to overcome obstacles.” One can find inspiration in so many ways. Reading a book is just one way.

In recent weeks, Stacy and I have watched the Olympics. There are so many stories of athletes overcoming obstacles. One athlete that stands out for me is the gymnast, Stephen Nedoroscik. He specializes in the pommel horse event. On the day that the United States men competed in the team competition, he was shown sitting off to the side in his track suit. He was seen supporting his teammates as the day went on, all the while knowing that the last event was his time to shine. According to Sports Illustrated website2, “Nedoroscik became known for taking off his glasses when it was time to compete.” You see, Stephen has poor eyesight, so he chooses to complete through his sense of touch. He memorizes his routine, and then as if with magic, his hands follow. He totally crushed his routine and led the US Men Gymnastics Team to the medal stand. He did not, and has not, allowed his vision to get in the way of his love for this sport.

So why do I like inspirational stories? It is because I can resonate with them. They are motivating. They remind me of personal achievement and success. They remind me of the courage it takes in the face of life’s challenges.

I encourage you to recall some inspirational stories then to reflect and determine what values can help you to inspire others. As the Convoy of Hope article suggests, “let these stories remind you that no matter what you are facing, your perseverance, resilience, and your treasured human connections can lead to extraordinary outcomes.”

Blessings,
